About the Reykjavik Food Walk
If you’re a bit of a food lover, then a casual stroll around Reykjavik, sampling traditional dishes from some of our favorite spots, is going to be your little slice of heaven.
In our Reykjavik food walk tour you will sample at least 15 different Icelandic dishes; both traditional classics and modern favorites. You get to taste treats like smoked puffin, Icelandic lamb soup, the one and only hot dog of Iceland, fish jerky, unique Icelandic candy, fermented shark (if you dare :)), lava bread, lobster soup, Minke whale steak and finally a skyr dessert. There are even more secret treats than made this list.
They say that sharing a meal is the best way to get to know each other, we think a walking tour with at least 5 foodie stops is even better! Our stops include the oldest restaurant in Reykjavik, a legendary hot dog stand, our favourite food market and one of the top restaurants in Iceland. We’ll walk around 2.5km, making stops along the way. You’ll also learn what the Vikings ate and how Icelandic people have survived harsh winters thanks to our special cooking and preserving methods. And we visit the wonderful food stalls of the Reykjavik Flea market during the weekends!
Icelandic food isn’t well known by the rest of the world, but we’re hoping to change that. We have long, dark winters where we spend a lot of time indoors, and we have an abundance of fresh meat, fish and dairy, so we’ve kinda perfected this whole ‘cooking’ business.
With no more than 12 people on a tour, you’ll be able to ask any questions about Icelandic food and culture. And, you certainly won’t leave feeling hungry!
Consider us your friends, here to show you around and make sure you have a great time. Join us and share in our passion for history, food and making new friends. Bon appetite! Or, as we say in Iceland ”Verði þér að góðu.”

"We did the food tour and the beer tour with Valur back-to-back, and I can't imagine a better introduction to Icelandic culture, history, and culinary traditions."
"All the Tastes of Iceland"
"My husband & I took the foodie tour with Valur the day after we arrived in Reykjavik. It was a great introduction to not only the food but the history & local culture as well. Valur was a great guide - very knowledgeable & highly personable. We definitely recommend this tour. If you love to experience new things (Puffin, Shark, Seaweed.....and yes, Lamb Stew, Lobster Soup & much more) than this tour is for you. My favorite was the minke whale & my husband's was the hot dogThank you Valur for starting our trip off with a bang!"
"Best experience(s) of our trip"
"We went on three tours with Valur, the history, food, and beer tours, and I have to say they were the best part of our week in Reykjavik. Other tours were not as relaxed, comfortable, and informative as a day out with You Friend in Reykjavik. Valur is warm, welcoming, and charismatic, and truly gave us a local's feel for the town. We returned to sites on the tour and were the only non-locals. I highly recommend starting your trip with a tour; we learned so much information and history, and knew where to go to eat and hang out the rest of our time there! I can't recommend this enough, huge thanks to Valur- we really did have a friend in Reykjavik."
