About The Reykjavik Food Tour, Traditional Icelandic Food

One of the best things about doing our Reykjavik Food Tour is getting a sense of the history of the country while eating something delicious and exciting. In our Reykjavik Food tour you will sample at least 10 different Icelandic dishes; both traditional classics and modern favorites. You get to taste treats like smoked puffin with crowberry liqueur sauce, the special Icelandic butter and bread, traditional Icelandic lamb soup, the Icelandic lamb hot dog, Icelandic lobster soup, minke whale steak, fermented shark, three types of fresh fish of the day, skyr dessert, an Icelandic drink, craft beer, brennivín or just coffee? and maybe more Icelandic treats depending on the day and season.

They say that sharing a meal is the best way to get to know each other, and we know our Reykjavik Food Tour helps you get a deeper understanding on the history, culture and of course the cuisine of Iceland.

We’ll walk around 2.5km, making stops along the way. Our stops include a brilliant new Gastropub, the oldest restaurant in Reykjavik, a legendary hot dog stand, our favorite food market (if open) and the authentic Seabaron down by the old Reykjavik harbor and Icelandic fish and chips. And we visit the wonderful food stalls of the Reykjavik Flea market during the weekends (only included on the 1.00pm tour on weekends).

You’ll also learn what the Vikings ate and how Icelandic people have survived harsh winters thanks to our special cooking and preserving methods and then how our cuisine evolved to present day as young chefs are doing modern twists with the special Icelandic ingredients.

Icelandic food isn’t well known by the rest of the world, but we’re hoping to change that. We have long, dark winters where we spend a lot of time indoors, and we have an abundance of fresh meat, fish and dairy, so we’ve kinda perfected this whole ‘cooking’ business.

With no more than 12 people on a tour, you’ll be able to ask any questions about Icelandic food and culture. And, you certainly won’t leave feeling hungry!

All our guides are experts and graduates from the Tour Guide School of Iceland, but more importantly, they know how to entertain and educate at the same time. Consider us your friends, here to show you around and make sure you have a great time. Join us and share in our passion for history, food and making new friends. Bon appetite! Or, as we say in Iceland ”Verði þér að góðu.”

"Great Tour"

"We did the food tour and the beer tour with Valur back-to-back, and I can't imagine a better introduction to Icelandic culture, history, and culinary traditions."

"All the Tastes of Iceland"

"My husband & I took the foodie tour with Valur the day after we arrived in Reykjavik. It was a great introduction to not only the food but the history & local culture as well. Valur was a great guide - very knowledgeable & highly personable. We definitely recommend this tour. If you love to experience new things (Puffin, Shark, Seaweed.....and yes, Lamb Stew, Lobster Soup & much more) than this tour is for you. My favorite was the minke whale & my husband's was the hot dog. Thank you Valur for starting our trip off with a bang!"

"Best experience(s) of our trip"

"We went on three tours with Valur, the history, food, and beer tours, and I have to say they were the best part of our week in Reykjavik. Other tours were not as relaxed, comfortable, and informative as a day out with You Friend in Reykjavik. Valur is warm, welcoming, and charismatic, and truly gave us a local's feel for the town. We returned to sites on the tour and were the only non-locals. I highly recommend starting your trip with a tour; we learned so much information and history, and knew where to go to eat and hang out the rest of our time there! I can't recommend this enough, huge thanks to Valur- we really did have a friend in Reykjavik."
